from tangier we headed west to find the atlantic ocean. this lighthouse sits on the point where the mediterranean opens into the ocean through the strait of gibraltar. a little farther away we found the cave of hercules, which, as you can imagine, has historical and mythological legends associated with it. they say the opening to the cave looks like africa (no, it doesn't) or a man wearing a turban (yeah). except for the warmer temperatures and the people selling woven and beaded knick-knacks, it really felt like being on the oregon coast.
these sites where also near the kings summer house. in fact we drove by a couple of miles of beachfront that was walled off where apparently the king likes to jet ski. when we were there the city of tangier was getting ready for a visit (vacation) from the king. it seemed like every major intersection had giant, bright red moroccan flags waving. men were working painting and landscaping, and everyone seemed pretty excited about it. seems kingy must have a pretty good approval rating.
