Last days in DC

We biked from the National Mall to Dupont Circle so we could eat at DC's newest cheeseburger landmark, the Shake Shack. I got a free custard for graduating, and the burgers were amazing.

We went back the next day so I could get a rhubarb custard. It was everything I hoped for.

We took one last tour of the art gallery as well.

And Laura was dressed like a door.

slide show with robert and laura

hi, this is robert and laura. we're making a blog post together.
laura: "here we are waiting for the bus in the morning."
robert: "delete that. we don't need a narration."
robert: "how ironic, this blog is putting me to sleep, too. get rid of 'ironic', is there a word for 'art imitating life'?"
laura: "in french, i think."

[robert insists we delete two pictures]

laura: "after checking out the lego exhibit at the building museum, we went to the art gallery to see the gauguin exhibit."
robert: silence
laura: "do you want to say anything about the exhibit, or about your experience, or about how i look...?"
robert: "i liked the exhibit. i like riding on the moving walkway because it feels like we're in star wars."
laura: "i've never been a big fan of gauguin."
robert: "i thought you were going to say, 'not a big fan of star wars'."
laura: "i'm not."

robert: "you look good here. you have andy warhol hair in this picture (and glasses)."
laura: "what!?" trying to type. "ok. you want it in parenthesis? where does the period go?"
laura: "blossoms in foggy bottom today. my dad always ended slide shows with pictures of pretty flowers."

we still haven't seen everything

we took the tour at the bureau of engraving and printing and learned all about money
after lunch we rode bikes. why not!
sure, it was cold out, but we can handle it. that's the white house behind me
we saw the famous willard hotel
fancy schmancy

off season

we like being tourists now that we feel like we have the town to ourselves again.
the other day we toured the art museums. we went specifically to see the Norman Rockwell and Edvard Munch exhibits.
we picniced in the portrait gallery/american art museum

a big head by Haas, from the Arcimboldo exhibit

More Museum Touring

Spring is beautiful here. There are flowers and blossoms everywhere. Tomorrow it's supposed to be 81 degrees!
These flowers are inside the National Gallery of Art.
This is the National Museum of the American Indian.

The best part was a special exhibit by Brian Jungen. I think art made from everyday objects is always interesting and inspiring.

What we did on St. Patrick's Day

Hello, St. Patrick's Church.
We ate lunch with my sister on the steps of the National Portrait Gallery.
Then we wandered south and found the National Building Museum. Those columns were huge. That's me in there.

We kept walking and found the National Postal Museum, where I totally failed the can-you-sort-mail-fast-enough test.
Then we explored Union Station, where we found delicious doughnuts.

having fun isn't hard when you've got a library card

we walked 19,560 steps on saturday.
one place we visited was warm, sunny, humid, and tropical-
we sat and let our skin soak it up
which helped to curb my apetite for spring

we went to the library of congress
and got our very own library cards.
robert laughed at the picture on my card.
he looks really good on his card

we went to a new burger place, too. Good Stuff Eatery is a close contender with Ray's Hell Burger for burger deliciousness. they have toasted marshmallow milkshakes!

Museum Hopping

There are 19 Smithsonian museums around DC, and we would have been to all of them already--I think we've been to 14 or so--except we rarely get out of one without spending all day there. Here are some museum pictures we've taken in the last week or so.

Renwick Gallery

American History Museum

This is the piston to a steam engine which used to power New York. They had a whole room full of steam engines. Our camera died on this trip or else we would have had far more pictures of the museum.

This section was supposed to be for kids, but we ended up spending over a half an hour there.

Church incorporated into GWU campus

This one is actually not a museum, but it was pretty cool anyway

National Portrait Gallery

This place is becoming my favorite place to study. It's just two metro stops or so from school, and you can eat, and it's quiet but not too quiet. Perfect.

Laura thinks this looks kind of like her Dad. Kind of. Mostly the hair. Bonus points to the first person to name him.

We've been to the National Portrait Gallery two or three times now, but we'd never gone up to the top floor because we always ran out of time looking at the bottom two. Well, the top floor sealed the deal; it is now my official favorite. Point you, National Portrait Gallery.
